The short answer
Live resin is concentrate from cryo-frozen flower. The freeze locks terpenes in place. Hydrocarbon extraction at -90 C selectively separates cannabinoids and terpenes from the rest of the plant matter. The result is full-spectrum, flavor-true, strain-specific concentrate.

How it differs from other concentrates
Distillate strips everything except the cannabinoid backbone, then re-introduces synthetic or non-cannabis-derived flavoring. Cured resin uses dried-and-cured flower, which has lost a meaningful percentage of its terpene profile during the dry-cure cycle. Rosin is solventless but typically uses cured flower or hash. Live resin is the strain-true full-spectrum benchmark.

What makes it strain-specific
Each cannabis strain has a unique terpene profile. The combination of myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, linalool, pinene, humulene, terpinolene, and ocimene at specific ratios determines flavor and effect. Live resin captures that ratio at the harvest moment. The result is that a live resin made from a given strain tastes like that strain's flower. A distillate cart with added strawberry flavoring is making the flavor up.
